How Long Does it Take To Learn SEO? (3 Minutes, If You Read This)
Listen, I’m not going to waste your time telling you the alllll the different things you need to learn or how long it takes to learn SEO.
I’ve been an SEO copywriter for 5 years, and I STILL don’t know everything.
Instead, I’m going to walk you through an exercise so you can understand the very basics of SEO that all of us SEOers know.
Grab my free SEO blog template, and let’s learn by actually doing some SEO work:
Step 1: Create a Free Ubersuggest Account
It’s FREE, for real.
Now go to Keywords > Keyword Ideas.
And type in something you’re REALLY good at or know a lot about.
I don’t care if it’s:
Copywriting
Website design
Bears
Beets
Battlestar Galactic
Now look at ALL THE KEYWORD SUGGESTIONS.
Tap on over the Questions and Related tabs, and you’ll get even MORE ideas.
Step 2: Picking a keyword
This is the hard part because, as you can see, there are so many options.
Let’s pretend you’re writing content for a company with mid-level traffic (5K-10K).
In the right-hand column, select a yellow keyword (go for red if you’re feeling feisty).
Try to select the one with the highest search volume.
If you’re just starting out, toggle the SD column on the far right so that it lists keywords from lowest SD (green) to highest (red).
Choose the keywords in green (yellow is okay if it’s under 50).

Step 3: Create SEO Content in 30 Minutes
Not that you have a keyword, write a:
Title
Meta description
Introduction (using the keyword).
Then, create an outline of things you want to talk about based on your keyword topic.
From there, you can just fill in the blanks with all your expert knowledge (or the knowledge you pick up from researching your clients’ industry)!
My FREE SEO Blog Template walks you through exactly when, where, and how often to use your keyword.
No plugins like Yoast are required (because it basically does the same thing).
That’s literally it.
Okay, okay. How Long Does it Really Take to Learn SEO?
Truth bomb:
It kinda annoys me when people (ahem, non-SEO experts) make SEO seem easier than it is.
So, even though this exercise was relatively easy, it’s not the entire picture.
There’s still:
Knowing your audience
Technical SEO (coding, Screaming Frog, other technical stuff; Disclaimer: I know nothing about this stuff, but still get incredible results for my clients)
Off-page SEO
Linking
Building relationships
SEO on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest (and what the differences are)
My honest opinion?
You can learn and charge for On-Page SEO in 90 days.
Especially if you join my SEO membership SEO Storytellers, mwahaha!
But really, my membership is for SEO newbs and business owners who just DO NOT want to post every day on social media.
So, I’ll teach you how to create SEO content (consistently) to reach more of the right people to scale your biz.
