5-SEO-Writing-Tips-Beginner-Bloggers

If you’re a seasoned writer or an ambitious business owner who is eager to get into the world of blogging, you’ll want to follow these SEO writing tips to help get your blog up and running.

SEO is essential to building an online presence. If you’re feeling intimidated – don’t be! SEO is a lot easier than you think.

As a fellow blogger and business owner, I totally understand that starting a blog may feel like adding one more thing to your already full plate. It can seem challenging and often discouraging if your hard work doesn’t get the number of views you were hoping for.

But I implore you not to give up!

Of the 1.7 million websites there are today, it’s estimated that over 600 million of them are using blogs. Your blog traffic increases by up to 30% once you publish 24-51 blogs, according to Traffic Generation Cafe. That’s just one blog per week. So, if you’re doubting that blogging is worth your time, think again.

But, if you’re only writing one blog post a week, how can you possibly increase your website traffic? SEO! It’s always the answer around here.

You may be surprised to learn that there is a creative side to excelling with SEO.

Where my creative writers at?

If the idea of suddenly becoming a master at compelling anecdotes seems daunting, keep reading and you’ll know where to start. Understanding the technical and creative aspects of cultivating your online presence are the building blocks of a lucrative blog.

Let’s get to it.

1. Use Keyword Phrases

The first of my SEO writing tips is to utilize keyword phrases within your body of your blog. Keyword phrases, also known as long-tail keywords, are more like full sentences rather than just using a few keywords. An example of a keyword I might use for this blog, for example, is writing tips. A keyword phrase would be something like SEO writing tips for bloggers.

Keyword phrases usually have a lower monthly search volume – but hear me out. Using keyword phrases gives you a higher chance of showing up on Google’s front page.

Because people know how smart Google is, they type in full phrases so that the search engine can narrow down results. This is helpful to bloggers because it gives us niche titles to use on our website, and phrases that we know will yield results with less competition.

Here are a few rules about when to use your keyword phrases in your blog:

  • Try to use your keyword phrase three times per 500 words

  • Sprinkle them in as naturally as possible

  • Make sure your keywords/keyword phrases are distributed throughout your blog, not all in one section.

  • Aim to include your keyword phrase in at least one H2 section (the big bold headlines in your blog). You’ll keep your readers engaged while making Google happy. That’s a win-win.

2. My Favorite SEO Writing Tip: The HOOK

If your blog is boring right off the bat, no one is going to want to read it. Plain and simple.

If you ever fell asleep during your high school literature class, or you’re ready for a lunch break within 10 minutes into your morning office meetings, then you know what it’s like to be bored. We don’t want to put your audience through that.

How do we fix this? Grab your audience’s attention with a good hook. A hook, or your introduction, is your blog post’s first impression. Make it fun, snazzy, and use anything that will grab your reader’s attention and keep them reading. Good places to start include engaging anecdotes, interesting statistics, and asking a question that is relatable to the reader.

For example, if you were writing a food blog, you could give an anecdote about the first time you ate Chicago deep-dish pizza, and now you’re a proud pizza snob. Or, you could ask your readers when was the last time they had a memorable meal under $50. Maybe you could throw in a statistic about how many restaurants have gone under since the start of this year.

If you’re extra savvy, you’ll be sure to include that SEO keyword phrase we talked about in your hook. This will score you bonus Google points.

3. Keep It Casual

Write your blogs like you’re having a casual conversation with the reader. Whether you’re an influencer writing to your audience or you’re a business owner writing to a potential client, you need to keep it casual.

People buy things from other real people. If they feel like they’re reading a sales pitch, the chances of them investing time in your blog (or your business) are slim. Think about what it is that entices you to purchase a product or service from someone else. Causally convince your audience that you’re worth their time by talking to them like a friend, not a business partner. With this writing style, you’ll begin to see more readers, customers, and clients coming to you ready to buy what you’re selling.

Hellloooo full-time blogging career!

I could probably think of a dozen SEO writing tips, but these are the 3 cardinal rules in my book. I always recommend getting your writing style down first, and then tackle SEO strategies. But once you know how to do both, you’re blog is going to take off.
