Why You Should Hire an SEO Consultant Before a Social Media Manager

You know you need social media for your business. But maybe it's wearing you down, and you keep hearing about that second 'S' word:

SEO.

A social media manager is a must for keeping your social media active. But an SEO consultant will show strategies for passive leads, sales, and traffic.

Doesn't that sound less exhausting than posting a TikTok every single day? Let me show you exactly what your business would look like with SEO

First: What is an SEO Consultant?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Let's talk about what a search engine is and what isn't.

Platforms that have search engines:

  • Google, Duck Duck Go, Bing (Google being the most reliable one)

  • YouTube

  • Pinterest

Platforms that have search functions:

  • Instagram

  • Tik Tok I (though, I suspect they'll be more like YouTube this time next year)

  • Facebook

  • Reddit

  • Quora

  • Any other social media platform

Optimization means strategically creating content so that people can find it. SEO consultants do this by doing keyword research. We use various tools to determine which words, phrases, or questions are being asked on Google and other search engines.

We choose keywords based on:

  • Competition

  • Ranking ability, and

  • Search volume

How do we know for sure which keywords are the best? We use tools like Ubersuggest, Screaming Frog, and SemRush to provide reliable data.

SEO analytics is a lot more reliable than, say— Instagram hashtags. The only analytics you can read from hashtags is how often people use them. It doesn't tell us the monthly search volume or how likely we will show up to an audience if we decide to use those hashtags.

Hence, the dreaded social media "algorithm."

SEO Services You Can Ask About:

  • Keyword Research: Pretty much what I described above. All copy is run through SEO software to determine keyword density and effectiveness. I pick keywords with the easiest ranking score to start. Once we get you ranking for those smaller keywords, I start aiming for keywords with a higher search volume, which will get you more traffic.

  • SEO Writing (On-Page SEO): Blogs are useless— unless they have SEO keywords to answer your potential customer's questions. SEO works best compared with incredible writing and storytelling (this is especially important if you even hire a copywriter! Ask if they provide SEO keywords).

  • Off-Page SEO: The more visits your blog or landing page gets, the faster Google will be like, "Hey, this page is great! We should put it on the front page!" That's where Off-Page SEO comes into play. It means sharing your links on social media (Instagram stories, Facebook comments, etc.), embedding links into your email, and having social call-to-actions that point to your "link in bio."

  • SEO Auditing: Are you already ranking for keywords? Which keywords are your competitors ranking for, and how can you outrank them?

  • Local SEO: How can you show up first when people search "[your business] near me?"

  • Website Maintenance: SEO content works as long as your website doesn't suck. Things like slow load times and lousy formatting can deter visitors from reading or making purchases.

  • E-Commerce SEO: Passive income comes from content that

Second: How an SEO Consultant Will Make You More Money Than a Social Media Manager

Listen, listen, listen. Social media is important. There's no denying that.

However.

Your social media strategy should focus on two things:

  1. Community

  2. Impulse buys

You're trying to go viral for all the wrong reasons. Virality does not mean long-term success, and it certainly doesn't mean more money. Even Charli D'Amelio, TikTok star, agrees TikTok isn't as easy as it used to be

But this isn't even news. This has happened with every social media platform. After a few years, it wasn't as easy to get millions of subscribers overnight like Jenna Marbles and Smosh. And I'm pretty sure everyone knows how difficult it is on Instagram these days.

And yet, just a few years ago, Instagram was the place to be if you wanted an audience and a business.

Social Media is Active Marketing

Viral social media posts can generate income quickly because it's usually impulse buys. Your social media content lasts about 48 hours. After that, the hype dies down.

But what if you go viral without anything in place? No link in bio, no digital downloads, no Amazon storefront.

That's when the reality of going viral sets in for people who are lucky to experience it.

Plus, going viral shouldn't be the goal. Creating a community should be. A community that likes, knows, and trusts you enough to buy from you occasionally.

That's why you have to be active on social media. To nurture those online friendships the same way you nurture your partner and other loving relationships.

Yeah, it can get exhausting. But it's necessary.

SEO is Passive Marketing

While social media is necessary to sustain relationships, SEO is essential if you ever want to take a break from those relationships.

Because having Days Off is also necessary. For sanity.

SEO works behind the scenes because it's evergreen content. That's why YouTubers can take a year off and not see it in their bank accounts; they're constantly getting ad revenue from old YouTube videos.

The same goes for bloggers who have ads on their blogs. It's always coming in. They don't have to promote it daily because Google is doing it for them.

But Google is only this generous when you create long-form, educational, entertaining, reliable, and searchable content. And that's what your SEO consultant will figure out for you

Suffice it to say if you're craving less than a 40-hour work week, you need SEO to set you up for long-term success.

Finally: How SEO Consulting Can Passively Work For Your Business

Let's say I write you a landing page for restaurant interior design.

As an SEO consultant, I would want to find your keywords that are easy to rank for with a high search volume.

The keywords I found for this are:

  1. cafe interior designer: 480 monthly searches

  2. restaurant interior design: 1,600-month searches

  3. restaurant interior designer near me: 140 monthly searches

I would use all 3 of these in your landing copy. These are all considered "easy" to rank for, which makes me confident when I can get you to page 1 of Google.

You're still getting traffic even if you are the 3-5th option on page 1.

Based on what Ubersuggest tells me, here's how many visits you can expect to get every month if you're the THIRD search result:

  1. cafe interior designer: 9 visits

  2. restaurant interior design: 31 visits

  3. restaurant interior designer near me: 3 visits

Forty-three monthly visits per month doesn't seem like a lot.

But let's say your service is $1,000 per project. In 1 year, you'll get 516 people looking at your restaurant interior design service. At a 1% conversion rate*, that means you'll get 5-6 clients from this landing page. Or $5,000-$6,000 per year.

That's at least a $4,500 ROI per year. From one landing page.

*The average landing page conversion rate falls around 2.35%. The top 25% of sites are converting at 5.31% and above, while the top 10% are looking at 11.45% and above. [Source]

And that's just from a single landing page. Imagine if you had SEO on your Etsy Store, your Pinterest Pins, your YouTube videos, and your website blogs.

The ROI will be insane. And passive. Social media will be for fun and being— well— social. And occasionally for some extra income.
