How often should you blog for SEO as a business owner? My advice as an SEO strategist

The one thing that SUCKS about the internet is how much conflicting advice there is out there.

I just looked at the top 3 blogs for “How often should you blog for SEO” and they all say something different from what I’m about to tell you:

If you want to see a SIGNIFICANT increase in traffic and inquiries for your business with SEO blogs, I recommend blogging once per week for at least 6 months.

That’s based on 7+ years of writing SEO blogs for HUNDREDS of clients and seeing what happens when you blog consistently for 6 months vs when you change your strategy every 1-3 months.

SPOILER ALERT! The clients who stick to blogging longer get more traffic AND more clients!

Lemme just show you.

First… don’t trust all the SEO people out there

There’s something you need to see:

There are people like this asshat who will tell you that they wrote a blog post TWO DAYS AGO and it’s already ranking on Google. 🙄

What they’re NOT telling you is that the keyword in the Google search bar, “white label SEO for web designers” gets 0 monthly searches every month.

I use Ubersuggest for keyword research, by the way. Click here to see why I like it over Keysearch

WHAT THEY’RE ALSO NOT TELLING YOU is that you’re basically guranteed to rank on page 1 when there’s 0 search volume and 0 competition.

Oh. Wait… that asshat is me. 😅

And I did catch my mistake and point it out in the comments.

But only after I impressed 100+ people with my seemingly SEO Witchery. 😬

I wanted to point this out because you need to know who to trust when it comes to SEO because people will try to show off Google Search Console screenshots with insane numbers like:

  • 100K clicks… but it’s over the course of a year

  • Ranking in 2 days… but it’s for a keyword nobody is searching for, making it easy AF to show up in Google Search Results.

Now that you know you can trust me because I’ll point out my own ass-hatery, let me just answer the fucking question:

How often should you blog for SEO every month?

My clients see a signifcant increase in clicks and inquiries after publishing 4 blogs per month for at least 6 months.

There’s 2 reasons for this:

  1. Google (and people) trust them because they have a library  of content around certain subjects (trust = higher rankings & higher conversions)

  2. They treat SEO like a 401(k) of their marketing strategy. Their traffic compounds over time, reaching people OUTSIDE THEIR CURRENT SPHERE OF INFLUENCE (i have more to say on this— HOLD ON!) to get more leads without social media.

I always say SEO is a human-first approach, despite the name.

MILLIONS of people are out there asking the same question every damn day.

SEO simply shows you how many people are asking that question.

Your job with SEO blogs is answer them.

It’s not fluff. It’s not trying to appease the algorithm or mythical SEO Gods.

SEO is literally just,

“Oh, you have a question? Here’s the answer.”

Plus, with SEO, you DO NOT NEED TO PROMOTE YOUR BLOGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

EVER.

SEO BRINGS PEOPLE TO YOU!

Passively! Organically!

This is SO important to understand.

SEO is literally how you reach people. Especially people outside your current sphere of influence.

I have not ONCE promoted my clients’ blogs using social media, ads, email marketing, or anything else.

When you commit to answering 4 freaking questions every month (i.e., writing 4 blogs every month), you have:

  • 24 blogs showcasing you as the authority on 1-2 topics you become Known For.

  • 24 blogs answering every single question your ideal client could possibly have before hiring you.

  • 24 blogs passively pointing to your product/service YEARS after you hit publish (my clients still have blogs on Google’s front page from like… 2019)

  • 24 blogs to repurpose from if you get bored of blogging

  • 24 chances to show up in search where MILLIONS of people spend their time looking for answers

So, yeah.

I DO recommend sticking to writing 1 blog per week for 6 months if you want to show up in search results.

“No shit, Tiffani. You said that 500 words ago. Any proof?”

I’m glad you asked.

PROOF that blogging 1x per week for 6 months is the sweet spot for SEO

I’ve been an SEO copywriter for a decade now.

(god, i’m old)

I started off as an SEO blog writer and social media manager before transitioning to SEO content education and website copywriting.

(here’s the difference between copywriting and content writing, by the way)

Here’s my proof that  you want to write 1 blog per week

(you can also just publish them all on the same day that month… it doesn’t matter for SEO!)

2K clicks in 6 months + phone “ringing off the hook all summer”

Let me explain what you're lookin' at here:

This is data from my client's Google Search Console. You can see in the blue box that they were getting 162 clicks per month in the month of January 2024 (1/1/24 - 1/31/ 24).

Underneath that, you see 2.02K, which is the total number of clicks they were getting on their website LESS THAN 5 MONTHS LATER from 5/11/24-6/10/24.

And yes, it led to sales because by August 2024, they were getting nearly 3K clicks per month and my client sent me this email (which i shared on IG stories):

10K clicks+ passive leads after writing 2 blogs per month

This image shows what happened ONE WEEK after I optimized 30 of my client's existing blogs that had zero SEO strategy.

(despite their web/content team swearing the blogs were “SEO-optimized”… but not even the meta descriptions were filled out 🙄)

This was January 2021. They end up booking me for the rest of the year (i mean… look at those results!) to write just TWO blogs per month for the next 11 months.

So: 30 optimized old blogs + 24 new blogs in one year = 54 blogs.

By January 2022 (1 year later), the client had grown tired of their business and wanted to sell it. Naturally, they stopped blogging services.

But 6 months later, I noticed they were still in business. 🤔 I thought,

“Huh. Wonder what happened?”

Until I got this report from Google Search Console a few days later:

Steak too juicy. Lobster too buttery. 🥩🦞

(they're still in business, by the way. and still getting thousands of clicks every month despite not posting ANY content on their blog OR SOCIAL MEDIA since December 2021!!!!)

130K+ clicks + getting rid of ads and social media 3 years later

Does your business NEED 130K monthly website visits?

No.

Does it save you time, money, and sanity because you won't need to obsess over social media trends or waste thousands on ads?

Yeah.

This client of mine straight up GHOSTED me 3 months after these numbers hit AND they had let go of their ads person a few months prior.

Legitmately all of their business comes from blog traffic… and they didn’t need any more. 😅

How often should you blog for your business? (don’t listen to Reddit)

I just saw on post on Reddit saying you should post a blog 2-3x per week?

My good sir, I think the fuck NOT!
My clients who blog just ONCE per week went from:

  • 162 visits per month → 2K visits per month in less than 5 months

  • 1,246 visits per month → 10K visits per month in 1 year

  • 0 visits per month → 130K visits per month in 3 years

That means that ON AVERAGE, my clients who blog weekly hit 2K–5K monthly website clicks within 6 months.

1 piece of content for 6 MONTHS?! And then you don't have to worry about social media EVER AGAIN?

If you're trying to reach people OUTSIDE your current sphere of influence, blogging every week WITH SEO is how you do that.

But like I pointed out, one client just had me REOPTIMIZE a bunch of their OLD blogs and then just blogged TWICE per week.

You can do that, too.

A full blog “library” that gets search engines AND people to trust you, I would say, is about 52 blogs.

If you can commit to writing ONE PIECE OF CONTENT PER WEEK for a YEAR, you’ll depend so much less on social media, my guys and gals!

And if you need somone to hold you accountable to do that, join the Dreamer’s Do Edition of my membership, SEO Storytellers.

RELATED: How many keywords should I use for SEO? The simple answer.

Let’s talk about quality vs quantity

Like… duh? That should always be rule #1 when it comes to creating content.

I’m very anti-hustle culture and have been preaching since 2018 that you actually need to post LESS if you want your content to get more engagement and traffic.

But when you’re just blogging without a strategy (you know… like an SEO strategy), honestly…

What the hell are you even blogging for?

People who teach you to blog without an SEO strategy are doing you a HUGE disservice, in my opinion.

To me, it sounds like they’re telling you to:

  1. Waste time creating content nobody is searching for or cares to read.

  2. Market “when you feel like it,” leaving money on the table.

  3. Work harder by repurposing your blog across multiple channels instead of getting all of your traffic directly from search engines (you know, the thing humans are using to get answers from other humans?)

I always tell my clients that they want 1 social media channel and 1 SEO channel.

  • Social media for community.

  • SEO for content that lasts longer than the algorithm

You can repurpose your blog (i literally teach you how inside my membership, SEO Storytellers!) but it shouldn’t be your strategy for getting people to find and read your blog.

That all happens passively when you have an SEO strategy for your blogs.

Don’t just blog when you have something to say

The entire POINT of SEO is to answer questions people are actively searching for answers to.

So this advice already stems from “write about what you want to write about” and not “write to help other people.”

Which… completely negates the point of SEO. And blogging in general.

You want to blog whenever you see a question that you can answer.

Okay, okay— fine! I’ll write SEO blogs. But WTF do I blog about?

Whoa… crazy that you mention that because I have a $77 workshop that literally shows you how to plot out your blogs like youe very own TV show so that you can:

  • Become THE go-to person in your industry

  • Grow your blog traffic faster (without repurposing or promoting it)

  • Get EXCITED to write your next blog every week so you actually stick to it

It’s called WTF Do I Post? and you can use it to help you come up with topics for your blog, newsletter, AND social media content!

Blogging FAQs

How long should a blog be for good SEO?

People will tell you make your blog longer than what’s already showing up on Google for the keyword you’re targeting.

(keyword = problem or question someone types into the search bar)

I say that’s bullshit.

Write what you want to write until you have nothing left to say.

In fact, many of my blogging students inside my membership, SEO Storytellers, write blogs that are way too long!

500 words IS enough.

But if you’re like me and can’t seem to shut up about a topic you’re passionate about (like how many blogs you should write for SEO), that’s okay, too.

How long does it take to write a blog?

I actually documented how long it took to write this blog in real time on Threads.

ACTUAL Answer:

2 hours, 40 minutes

ANNOYING Answer:

It depends!

How fast do you type? Do you already know what you want to say? How much research do you need to do? Is this blog for YOU or a client?

Where should I blog for my business?

You always want to blog on your own website— especially when you own a business— rather than blog on Substack or Medium.

I explain why (and compare them all) in this blog on Blogs vs Substack vs Medium.
